Standard Work

The Standard Work workshop is a two-day intermediate level Lean Solution that demonstrates how to create a standardized method to be used by all employees all the time. Without Standard Work, each employee will have their own methods, some of which are safer, more efficient or produce a higher quality product than others. By creating a standard method, you will take the best practices and combine them into a standardized work procedure. This procedure will then be communicated using a simple, visual worksheet that will be posted at the work center, so it is easy to reference.

When companies implement Standard Work, their processes are safer, more efficient, and have improved quality. In addition, throughput is more consistent, allowing for a more regular flow of product through the value stream. This consistent flow of product allows for an overall reduction in inventory; supermarket sizes can be reduced, thereby lowering the lead-time from the customer's perspective.

Standard Work is considered an intermediate workshop because it works best if Lean Solutions such as Single Piece Flow, 5S and Quick Changeover have already been implemented. Why standardize a process that is riddled with waste? Remove the waste, and then standardize the improved method to sustain the results. Standard Work should also be applied after other improvements such as Lean Material Handling and Linking Flow: FIFO, Kanban & CONWIP, although you need not complete these workshops before applying Standard Work.

Without Standard Work improvements made by companies through the implementation of Lean quickly erode as employees fall back into their old habits, and waste creeps back into the processes. That is why good Standard Work includes an auditing system to ensure that all employees use the best method, all the time. During this workshop, participants will not only develop the Standard Work worksheet, but will also create an auditing schedule to ensure that this method is used every cycle.

Standard Work is not restricted to the shop floor. Administrative, accounting, material handling, quality, engineering, and every other department can benefit from utilizing a standard method on repeatable tasks.

Like most Lean Solutions workshops, Standard Work combines classroom theory with practical exercises and case study simulations to reinforce the training. A simple simulation will help participants learn how to create Standard Work. They will then be assigned a workstation within your facility for which they will create Standard Work with the assistance of a Lean Solutions facilitator.

Objectives
  • Introduce Standard Work
  • Understand the benefits of implementing Standard Work
  • Implement Standard Work at a workstation within your facility
  • Create a plan to audit the process to ensure that Standard Work is sustained

Agenda

Day One

  • Introduction to Standard Work
  • Defining Standard Work
  • Why Implement Standard Work?
Day Two
  • Levels of Standard Work
  • Implement Standard Work
  • Summary

Typical Results

Workshop participants will be able to apply the principles of Standard Work to any area of your organization. Areas selected for the practical exercise will be safer, more efficient, produce higher quality products, and have more consistent throughput. Training new employees will be easier as there will only be one method to learn for each job!

Who Should Attend

Since Standard Work can (and should) be applied to any area of your organization, this workshop is ideal for everyone. Managers, supervisors and team leaders need to understand the principles of Standard Work as they play a vital role in auditing the improved method. All other employees also need to understand that they play a vital role in improving the standard method, and that there is a procedure for doing so.

Prerequisites

This is an intermediate level workshop and should only be implemented in areas where improvements were made using a different Lean Solution (such as Single Piece Flow, 5S, Quick Changeover, Lean Material Handling, or Linking Flow: FIFO, Kanban & CONWIP). Most attendees should have some prior Lean knowledge, although basic concepts are reviewed at the start of the workshop. If Lean is new to your organization, consider starting your Lean journey with either Launching the Lean Initiative or Lean Principles.

What you Receive

As with all our workshops, each participant receives their own workshop binder so they can keep their own notes for reference once the workshop is over. Participants also receive a Certificate of Completion to show that they have completed a Lean Solutions workshop.

The materials from the workshop may be redistributed within the company. Many organizations choose to hold short training sessions using these materials prior to applying Standard Work to a new area of the company so that all employees participating receive Standard Work training. Additional workbooks are also available (call for pricing).

You also receive a 100% guarantee! If you are not satisfied either with the material covered or the teaching style of the workshop facilitator, there will be no charge! If we fail to meet your expectations, the only thing you will be asked to pay for will be the expenses incurred.

Workshop Follow-up

Although our workshops are designed to give the knowledge to you and your team, follow-up days are recommended to review progress made following each workshop. Typical organizations require one to two follow-up days about 2-4 weeks following the workshop. These follow-up days also help to ensure that the principles learned during the workshop are not forgotten or neglected after the workshop is over. If you are interested in a greater involvement by one of our expert facilitators, check out our On-Site Lean Implementation solution.

Pricing & Contact Information

The base cost for this two-day workshop is $7,000, which covers the first 15 participants. Classes larger than 15 participants will be taught by two facilitators and cost $11,000. In order to keep the class size manageable and to facilitate the learning process, Lean Solutions restricts the maximum class size to 30 participants. Follow-up days cost $1,500-$2,000 per day, depending upon the experience of the facilitator. There is a 10% discount available for long-term engagements. Expenses are in addition to the costs outlined above and include cost of travel and accommodation (if required) as well as meals and workbooks ($20 per participant).

Lean Solutions will tailor workshops to meet each company's requirements. Call or e-mail for more information or to schedule a workshop.
